hey there all,

i have just put gentoo on my powerbook and am really liking it. the main problem i have is that i cant get some great packages to emerge, and it doesnt look like they are even fully ready for ppc yet. firefox for example, i simply cant get to emerge. i have only the standard USE="altivec" even right now. i looked it up on the package list and it doesnt look like its even stable yet. thunderbird is also still unstable. these are two basic pillars of my everyday use, and i am sure for man of you out there as well. has anyone gotten these to work on ppc? if not what do you use for web and email?

thanks.

Firefox 0.8 working here. Kernel 2.4.24-ppc-r2, try:

Code:

emerge /usr/portage/net-www/mozilla-firefox/mozilla-firefox-0.8.ebuild

hmmm, also cant get any of the gcc-3.3.X to compile either. that sucks since i wanna try out NPTL. in general, i know that ppc has packages develop slower, jsut wish that we could catch up on some of it.

:x

Hmmm... I have firefox 0.8, and GCC 3.3 working on my G4. Have you tried: "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" emerge gcc mozilla-firefox"?

fyi, here is my make.conf that I used to compile these packages. It uses some relatively agressive cflags, and I've had to play with them to make them work... If yours are _more_ agressive, then I'd suggest that's the problem.

Alternatively, you could try posting some of the errors you're getting, so see if people here could be of more specific help.

Code:
/etc/make.conf:

CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=7450 -fsigned-char -mpowerpc-gfxopt -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fforce-mem -fomit-frame-pointer -falign-functions=4 -fprefetch-loop-arrays -ffast-math -fforce-addr"
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
USE="altivec alsa arts berkdb cdr crypt dedicated dga -directfb doc dvb dvd dvdr emcode ehereal fbcon flac flash gd gif gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml imagemagick imap imlib innodb java jpeg kde libwww mad maildir mbox mikmod motif mozilla mpeg ncurses oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl plotutils png -bindist python qt quicktime readline samba sdl spell ssl tcltk tcpd tiff truetype trusted unicode usb videos wmf X xml xml2 Xaw3d xmms xv yahoo zeo zlib ~ppc -cups"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://212.219.247.13/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc"
