Just completed my first install of Gentoo on a mac, although I've done it plenty of times on x86.

I've installed a complete ~ppc system, including kde. All seems to work fine except ALSA.

ALSA *appears* to be configured properly, and alsamixer shows the card. 'aplay some.wav' seems to play the wav with no errors, and seems to try and play it for the right length of time, - However, no sound comes out.

I'm trying to get sound out of the internal speaker. It's a silver powermac g4. ALSA thinks the sound card is a 'tumbler'.

Here is the output from amixer:
Code:
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 176
Front Left: Playback 176 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 176 [100%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]
Simple mixer control 'Headphone Detection',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [off]
Simple mixer control 'Bass',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 72
  Mono: 43 [60%]
Simple mixer control 'Treble',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 72
  Mono: 43 [60%]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 176
  Mono: Playback 140 [80%]
Simple mixer control 'PC Speaker',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]
Simple mixer control 'Auto Mute',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [off]
Simple mixer control 'DRC',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]
Simple mixer control 'DRC Range',0
  Capabilities: volume volume-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: 0 - 95
  Mono: 68 [72%]

I've played with the various settings in amixer quite a lot. Maxed and unmuted everything... Stuff like that. It seems to make no difference.

I've also tried connecting some headphones to the headphones jack, and can't get any noise out of those either.

An ideas about where to look?

Some more details:

My kernel is latest development-sources. 2.6.3-benh2

I have everything compiled into the kernel, instead of as modules... But all of the alsa programs are happy. (Saves on module configuration files, I think)

"Powermac DMA support" is NOT compiled into the kernel
ALSA, Sequencer Support, Sequencer dummy client, OSS API Emu, and the Powermac devices are built into the kernel. Everything else is switched off.

"aplay some.wav -v" reports no errors

argh!

I hadn't compiled I2C_KEYWEST into the kernel. I thought I had, but I hadn't. Doing that fixed it.
