If you use xmms+ xmms-midi for playing midis, you must have noticed these lines on xmms's startup:

gsdrums.cfg: line 155: bad patch option #
gssfx.cfg: line 12: bad patch option #
xgmap2.cfg: line 29: bad patch option #

I have seen those three lines enough times for the rest of my life, so I decided to do a small research on how to get rid of them. It happens that xmms-midi uses a very old version of timidity, and such old version does not allows for comments in the middle of their config files (*gasp*). The above error messages basicly are saying that they did not like the comments on the three mentioned files, and abort. Normally it wouldn't be a big issue... but timidity is aborting the reading of the config file when it finds an error, meaning that the three config files are being ignored completely.

You have two choices here: Go edit /etc/timidity.cfg and remove the entries for the gsdrums.cfg, gssfx.cfg and xgmap2.cfg since they aren't being loaded anyway... or.. go edit the three files to remove all in-line comments from them. If you go for the later, also you have to comment the "map" options in xgmap2.cfg since that isn't supported either.

A third option would be for someone to upgrade xmms-midi to work with a current timidity release, but I tried and failed, that's beyond my skills ^.^o

Shouldn't this go into bugzilla instead of documentation & tricks?

And what would the bug be? the fact that xmm-midi is compiled with an ancient version of timidity that does not supports the same config format as the current timidity versions? There is nothing to fix... unless fixing meant getting someone to write an updated version of xmms-midi ^.^o

EDIT: After thinking about this for a while... I realized.. unless you must absolutely NEED the utilities of a full featured plugin (that is, see remaining time, have the seek function, watch the graphical display and all that of your song), then you might as well trash xmms-midi and use the meta-plugin instead. Altough that one is not in portage, still it's an easy and useful plugin for rare formats that have no plugins of their own.
