well i've got GNOME on my Al PB 1.25 and it seems a bit slow in window response. also, i've got xscreensaver, but those savers run really slow, but they should run fine. the 1.25GHz PBs come with a 64MB 9600... so that shouldn't be a problem. anyone know what i can do?? :?:

also, someone in another forum said i should use 'love-sources' for alot better responsiveness. but i've been reading up on love-sources, and it seems to be kernels? or kernel patches? is that right?

it also seems that they are mostly for Nvidia card issues and compatability.

so does anyone have any suggestions for making my GUI more snappy? anything i can do to better configure my ATI card? i don't know....?

Hey,

Not really a fix, but this will allow you to find out if it's a gnome problem or an X problem:
Code:

# emerge fluxbox
exit your gui,
#startx Fluxbox

fluxbox is a LOT lighter than gnome, so if you're experiencing the same slowdowns, then you know it's X. You may have to recompile. What version of X are you using, and what are your USE, and CHOST flags in /etc/make.conf? And what fps do you get if you run gtkgears? just to eliminate the possibility that this is a video driver problem.

glxgears, rather.

and you should be getting around 1100-1300 on a 9200 if you're using hardware accel.

btank,

thanks for your help. :)

well i finally got around to having a look at this problem again. i did 'emerge fluxbox' but i didn't exit Gnome to test it right then. but the next time i booted up Gentoo it just went straight into TWM (Tabbed Window Manager) instead of Gnome? :!: well while i was in there i tried out a screensaver again, but it was only the 'Gears' saver, i don't seem to have 'glxgears'. but it ran slow anyway. about 16fps at the start, then it slowed down to 6fps. :(

i tried exiting TWM to just get back to the command line, but i couldn't find out how... could someone tell me what command to use to close TWM? and how do i set Gnome to the default again?

and then of course i still have to fix the problem of GUI slowness... so - should i fix up Xfree86? or move over to X.org? i've heard that X.org is faster...

well any help getting this sorted out is much appreciated. :)

for the choice of wm try GDM ord KDM or elogin. To me it sounds like you have no 3d-acceleration, try to find out in the xorg.conf if you use an ati or vesa driver.

There is currently no hardware acceleration for the Radeon 9600 (M10) as found on the 1.25GHz AlBook.

Hopefully sometime within the next year...

So no, you won't get anything like 1100 fps with glxgears
( /usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears )
probably something closer to 140.

Use xorg-x11 rather than xfree since xorg-x11 actually supports the M10 (although not for 3D acceleration of course).

Hope this helps.
