OK, first off let me say that things should not be this hard, I have been running gentoo on several x86 machines since 1.2 and on a Sun Ultra 10 since 1.4, so the sheer fact that I can't get things working on a ppc is begining to drive me nuts. Here are my problems in no particular order plus a little background:

I have a 1.25 GHz Windtunnel (OS9 boot capable) with a Radeon 9000 video card which exhibits the freeze at mounting /proc on the 2004.0 livecd, I had to use the 1.4 livecd to install my system. It is connected to a Dell 1901FP flat panel monitor capable of 1280x1024 res. I also cannot load any framebuffer on either live cd (1.4 or 2004.0) other than ofonly, my system simply freezes after loading all of the openfirmware related stuff (openpic exit).

Problem #1:

I now have a system installed with the 2.6.1-r1 ppc-development-sources with support built in for both the openfirmware framebuffer and the New Radeon frambuffer (the old driver fails to compile). When I boot my system using the ofonly framebuffer it very happily chooses 1280x1024-8 and works fine, short of the 8-bit depth, precisely the thing I am trying to fix for MOL. When I boot the radeonfb framebuffer with no specific arguments it boots with 640x480-8, I cannot use this both because of the low res and the 8-bit depth. When I try to force it to a higher res in yaboot.conf with append="video=1280x1024-8" my monitor comes up telling me it cannot display this video mode, obviously it can, something else is wrong. This also happens with 1280x1024-15 and 1280x1024-16, I would be happy with either video mode. When I boot without arguements and try to set the fb through fbset my screen goes blank but I still have keyboard input. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Problem #2 (Most lkily related to #1):

I cannot get MOL to display in anything higher that 8 bit color depth, I believe this is because my framebuffer refuses to go any higher, I really only want confirmation of this.

Problem #3 (Also related to problem #1):

I boot into text mode, when I launch X it works perfectly fine at 1280x1024-15, but, when I exit I am greated with the same blank screen as above, I also still have keyboard input, I can type startx again and am greeted with fluxbox, no surprises there, but all of my virtual consoles are no longer visable and I only have keyboard input. I can regain visability through
Quote:
fbset -g 640 480 640 480 8
or type reboot and wait for my machine to come back up in order to regain visability of my consoles.

Problem #4:

In order to run ybin -v succesfully I need to boot of the 1.4 livecd and chroot and run it there, I figure that this is a kernel issue with the present version of yaboot as ybin outputs errors that my 2.6 kernel is too old but runs fine off the 2.4 kernel on the livecd. An annoying side effect of this problem is that once I run ybin -v off my live system it boots directly into OS X and no longer gives me yaboot prompts. Once I re-run ybin-v from the livecd everything is fixed.

I realize that most of my problems could probably be solved by running the 2.4 kernel but I have to whine and stamp my feet and say "I don't wanna!"

Please, Please, Please won't somebody help!

If anybody want to view any files (my kernel .config, my yaboot.conf, the output of dmesg or fbset) just let me know.

Thanks in advance.

you might try a newer 2.6.x kernel, the 2.6.3 works much better for most (read most) video drivers.

you can rsync the source from source.mvista.com, or I think you can download latest benh patched stuff from ppckernel.org

Yeah, wish I could try a newer kernel but the present 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 kernels exhibit the freeze at mount /proc issue with my generation of machines. I just have to wait 'till they fix these problems. Until then I will resort to YellowDog (unless anyone can recomend a better distro for the ppc [other then gentoo]), when these issues are fixed I will rush back to gentoo with a speed unknown to man. Until then *sigh*.

OK, minor update, it seems that using append="video=radeon:dfp" under 2.4.24 I can get 1280x1024-8, while this fixes the res under 2.4 it does not fix the color depth, also it does not work for 2.6 kernels, I hope that this is addresed in 2.6.4 since that seems to have fixed the freeze at mount /proc issue. If not I will be very sad, I want my Gentoo back, I had to retask my x86 so I am suffering from Gentoo withdrawl.

After installing the development-sources for 2.6.4 all of the framebuffer problems have mostly gone away, I can now hit 1280x1024 res with 8 bit depth at boot, I have to adjust it up to 16 manually with fbset. The only problem is that at 16 bit depth the console get frequently munged and I have to clear the screen to figure out what is going on. I recall this coming up in previous posts so I will look into it more.
