Does anyone here know of an alternate 802.11x card that can replace the Airport Extreme card in a Powerbook? Is it a proprietary apple connector of some sort?

Yes it is a proprietary connector :( however I believe powerbooks have a pcmcia slot? Buy something with a prism chipset for compatabilities sake. I have an iBook G4 w/ airport extreme It has no pcmcia slot i kind of bought it for that reason, nice and sleek.. so my only option is a usb wifi adapter. You can try USB as well the Netgear MA111 i believe it is called.. has a prism chipset and i have heard of success. I bought an SMC2662W USb adapter with the atmel chipset and it has been nothing but trouble.

Hopefully broadcom will release a linux driver soon!!

Check out that netgear ma111 its really compact and cheap. It should hold you out until broadcom gets their act together.. it totally sucks not bein able to use the integrated wifi in linux :(

Don't hold your breath for Broadcom. Even if they do release a Linux driver, it'll be x86 first. If they release a PPC driver simultaneously (or shortly afterwards) I will be happily impressed.

I'm not at all happy with the 'Airport Extreme' card. It also seems to have very poor range/signal compared to other wifi cards. I've tested a few of them. Even the old Airport cards were much more usefull.
