Having a nvidia card, I like to use the nvidia kernel module for GLX support. However, I had problems switching back to a console after starting X. Here is what you'll need to do:

Step 1:

Remove RIVA TNT2 frame buffer support from your kernel. use vesa instead. Make sure you have AGPGART support. EDIT: AGPGART as a module.(thanks to øxygen)

Step 2:
install your new kernel. reboot to the new kernel. make sure everything is allright. correct any problems and then proceed.

Step 3:
Code:
# emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx

Step 4:
fire up your favorite editor(as root), and edit your XF86Config.

Step 5:
in your video card section, change the driver line to "nvidia"

Step 6:
Code:
# modprobe nvidia

you might add it to modules.autoload.

Step 7:
fire up X, and you should see the nvidia splash screen if everything went well.

Enjoy!

NOTE: if you run a 2.6 kernel, you must rename /lib/modules/<kernel ver>/video/nvidia.o to nvidia.ko

GOOD NEWS - Heres a new ebuild https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45560 which does the renaming for you.

AGPGART -- where's that? :?: It's sure not in the make menuconfig.

compiling AGPGART into the kernel is generally a bad idea. The nvidia driver uses agpgart only in case nvidia implementation fails. You can control this with Option "NvAGP" in the XF86Config.
