I recently bought a power mac 8600av and I had some questions.
1) is it possible to use the av module, with video for linux?
2) what is best/ cheapest ide solution, if i use the promise card will macos 8.5 still boot?
3) what hardware doesnt work?
4) anything else i should know about ppc? I am well aquainted with the x86 version of gentoo and used to have a powerbook g3 with debian on it but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

I'd be amazed if there's a driver for that. Look at the xfree project page and see...regardless, there are much better ways to get audio and video functions with linux using PCI cards.

2) what is best/ cheapest ide solution, if i use the promise card will macos 8.5 still boot?

Works here on a 9500, no problems. MacOS just ignores it like any other card it wouldn't have a driver for.

3) what hardware doesnt work?

How many solar systems _do not_ contain life? ;)

4) anything else i should know about ppc?

Very likely.

4b) I am well aquainted with the x86 version of gentoo and used to have a powerbook g3 with debian on it but any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Not to troll too badly here, but unless there's some very specific reason you want to go ppc, x86 is generally a much-better supported environment, and price/performance ratio is "attractive". 1/3 of many gentoo boxes here are ppc, oldworld and new. They work, I like them, but for me there's no advantage over x86 other than that they've already been paid for...and would be trashed if not for linux. G5 is another matter entirely.
