in so great a number that the startup messages vanish and i never get to see them. now i'm running 2.6.3 and would finally like to see some dmesg info...
is there some kernel config option i'm missing?

You can view all of dmesg's output by piping it to less:
Code:
dmesg | less

This way you can use the arrow keys to scroll through the output.

I don't have any clue what's causing the adb errors, though...

Turn off Event debugging in your kernel:

Code:

CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
#CONFIG_INPUT_EVBUG is not set

Event debugging should only be enabled if you are troubleshooting a certain issue.

Have you disabled Raw ADB keycodes in your kernel config? If not, I would try that. It's a recommendation in the Gentoo PPC FAQ:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml

See code listing 1.3.
