I have had pretty bad results using 3D acceleration, playing avi & mp3, and with configuring sound on KDE. I'm using a G4 (daystar upgraded) pismo with 512MB RAM and kernel 2.6.3

First I tried using alsa and KDE, which worked but took up a lot of cpu and the sound quality was so-so. So I switched to dmasound_pmac and the sound is a little bit better using xmms, but KDE's "sound system" does not work and no KDE apps see /dev/dsp, no matter what i choose for the output driver. do need to reemerge KDE with different USE flags ie. -alsa? (I hope not!)

Is there a way to play avi files on gentoo-PPC? People say in the x86 forums that mplayer will do it, but it doesn't work for me:
Code:

mplayer file.wma -ao pcm

Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: init_audio_codec

- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
  disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.

I also tried kaffeine but it produces no sound, even though the neat 3D eye candy appears when I press play.

About 3D, I enabled agpgart and r128 and apple uninorth in the kernel. It almost works right, except that the screen flickers irritatingly on some things like the molecule screen saver. glxgears however looks fine and reports 437 fps with no error messages. I tried specifying r128 and ati for the video driver in my XF86Config but the results are the same.

Should I try different player apps? Is multimedia just bad on PPC? I got most of this stuff working on my x86 machine....

I think I've seen this one before... Try disabling DRI in your XFree86Config and see if it works after that.
Alternatively, try using MPlayer's xvidix driver (Preferences -> Video -> xvidix). On my Pismo it distorts the colors on the rest of the screen upon initialization but then runs very smoothly, even with 3D accelleration enabled. You might also want to try the gl and gl2 drivers, but with only 8 MB VRAM on the r128 OpenGl video is a joke.

Could either one of you post your 2.6 kernel configuration? I'm also using a Pismo and haven't got networking working yet.

About the dmasound_pmac problem. I get similar behaviour if I load (modprobe) dmasound_pmac) after KDE starts up - adding it to modules.autoload in /etc... fixed it. You might try doing killall artsd and going to the kcontrolpanel, disable the sound server - apply, and then reenable it - apply, and then press Test sound. Usually works for me.

EDIT: Searching the forums I found this URL for a Pismo 2.6 kernel config: http://www.freewebs.com/diskbreaker/pismo26.conf in this discussion here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=117016&highlight=pismo+config in case someone is looking. I have yet to try it out though.
