I tried varius kernels from gentoo (2.4.24-ppc-r2, 2.6.3-r2, 2.6.5_rc2)
I also tried getting the latest snapshot from bk repository linuxppc-2.5-benh
And I also tried replacing the airport driver with the latest from CVS, and
tried with versions 0.13d and 0.13e of the orinoco drivers...

I use the following commands:
Code:

modprobe airport
iwconfig eth1 essid myess
iwconfig eth1 mode ad-hoc

If I do an iwconfig now, the card seems perfect, all settings applied etc
I then do
Code:

ifconfig eth1 192.168.3.1

but I cannot ping the card on my desktop
after this, iwconfig shows
Code:

eth1            IEEE 802.11-DS Nickname:"HERMES I"
                Mode: Ad-Hoc  Tx-Power=15 dBm
                RTS thr:off
                Encryption key: off

Output on var/log/messages with orinoco 0.13d and 0.13e under kernel 2.4.24:
On module loading:
Code:

Airport at physical address  80030000
eth1: Station identity 001f:0001:0008:0046
eth1: Looks like a Lucent/Agere firmware version 8.70
eth1: Ad-hoc demo mode supported
eth1: IEEE standard IBSS ad-hoc mode supported
eth1: WEP supported, 104-bit key
eth1: MAC address 00:30:65:0B:B0:6B
eth1: Station name "HERMES I"
eth1: ready
airport: card registered for interface eth1

when I iwconfig eth1 after the ifconfig
Code:

hermes @ MEM 0xeb1f2000: Card removed while waiting for command completion. (2  times)
hermes @ MEM 0xeb1f2000: Card removed while issuing command. (8 times)

with latest bk kernel using orinoco 0.14alpha2HEAD
On module loading:
Code:

airport: physical address  0x80030000-0x80030fff
eth1: Hardware identity 0005:0001:0001:0002
eth1: Station identity 001f:0001:0008:0046
eth1: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 8.70
eth1: Ad-hoc demo mode supported
eth1: IEEE standard IBSS ad-hoc mode supported
eth1: WEP supported, 104-bit key
eth1: MAC address 00:30:65:0B:B0:6B
eth1: Station name "HERMES I"
eth1: ready
airport: card registered for interface eth1

when I iwconfig eth1 after the ifconfig
Code:

hermes @ MEM 0xea03e000: Card removed while waiting for command completion. (2
times)
hermes @ MEM 0xea03e000: Card removed while issuing command. (8 times)

Card works ok under osx 10.3.3...
Ideas on what to do? :?

I had problems with the ad-hoc mode, too. Nevertheless a point to point connection works in managed mode, too.
What do you want to do exactly?

I just want to make my ibook talk to my desktop computer
The desktop has a us robotics 5416 wireless card.

The desktop is set in ad-hoc mode on essid fanculia (italian people, don't laugh here )
desktop is 192.168.3.1, ibook should be 192.168.3.2

I also tried using the card without going into ad-hoc mode (iwconfig reports managed as default), but I get the same error... :-(

even doing a straight ifconfig eth1 up gives me the same result :-(((((

Semi solved: I had to put both my airport card and my desktop's card in open mode using
iwconfig eth1 key open
... duh
