From what I understand the bootstrap process ignores the USE flags you set in make.conf.
However the bootstrap script will respect the flags you set directly with export USE="..." (just like the export USE="-java" tip in the installation guide)

I found this useful when I wanted get rid of gpm. I never use the mouse in console, but gpm gets compiled during bootstrap because ncurses has +gpm flag set.
So I typed export USE="-java -gpm" before bootstrapping and wheee no more gpm!

This might be useful for other things e.g. setting export USE="ipv6" to get IPv6 support in the bootstrap packages.

I hope this hasn't been up before. I searched the forums and I couldn't find any topics that were clear on this.

Happy tweaking!

Probably a dumb question; but which USE-flags are used when bootstrapping anyway?
