Just thought I would let everyone know of an easy way I use to unmute my alsa sound on startup, heres what I did.

first I followed the guide to installing the alsa-drivers, then after I had the driver running correctly I made a plain text file containing the amixer unmute settings as follows below
Code:
amixer -q set Master 95% unmute
amixer -q set Center 95% unmute
amixer -q set PCM 95% unmute
amixer -q set CD 95% unmute

I named the file alsaunmute then placed it in my /bin directory, then made it executable. Next in the file local.start in /etc/conf.d I added the line alsaunmute. Just make sure to have no white lines in the alsaunmute file or you might get errors. Works great for me so far hope it works for you too :)

Alternatively just run alsamixer, set your levels, then add the alsasound init script to the boot runlevel. Hey presto, your levels get saved/restored automatically, just like it says in the howto.

Make sure you only have the drivers for your particular card compiled as modules, I once forgot to remove the intel8x0 driver form my kernel config (I use the cs46xx one), and got some errors at boot w.r.t. the intel8x0 driver.

If you have the alsasound script added to your boot runlevel, alsactl store is automatically run as part of the shut down/reboot sequence.
