I have seen a number of other topics about this. But I seem to be getting a different error from those seen in the topics I read:

I am running kernel 2.6 from benh with gnome 2.6. Perhaps anyone has helpful hints?

Code:
hdspconf.cxx: In function `void refresh_cb(void*)':
hdspconf.cxx:77: `H9632' undeclared (first use this function)
hdspconf.cxx:77: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each
   function it appears in.)

hdspconf.cxx:98: `struct _snd_hdsp_config_info' has no member named `da_gain'

Try emerging alsa-driver manually. That cleared it up for me.

Some "other threads"[tm] and the ebuild do have helpful hints:
from the ebuild:
Code:
# This is a list of the tools in the package.
# Some of the tools don't make proper use of CFLAGS, even though
# all of them seem to use autoconf.  This needs to be fixed.
#
# By default, all the supported tools will be compiled.
# If you want to only compile for specific tool(s), set ALSA_TOOLS
# environment to a space-separated list of tools that you want to build.
# For example:
#
#   env ALSA_TOOLS='as10k1 ac3dec' emerge alsa-tools
#
[ x"${ALSA_TOOLS}" = x ] &&
ALSA_TOOLS="ac3dec as10k1 envy24control hdspconf hdsploader \
hdspmixer mixartloader rmedigicontrol sb16_csp seq/sbiload \
sscape_ctl us428control usx2yloader vxloader"

I had to remove all tools which not existed already and then got alsa-tools installed.
(I do not need alsa-driver anyway, I am using a 2.6* kernel...)

hth and greets,
psyeye

Upgrading to an ever newer kernel, 2.6.5 seems to have solved the problem. Apparently my kernel did not match the tools I wanted to emerge.

I really have troubles getting the volume to work descently...if anyone knows solutions to that....

I'm working on x86, but I had a similar problem. I fixed it by bumping up to alsa-tools-1.0.4. (Copy the 1.0.4 ebuild to my portage overlay, and remove the tilda from the keywords.)

on x86, kernel 2.4.25, emerging alsa-dirvers-1.03 before the alsa-tools-1.03 was enough, while before that the error was exactly that of the struct
