I have a Dual 1.8 Powermac G5 with stock 512 MB , 160 GB hd and radeon 9600 pro. I'm hoping to give feedback via this thread as well as ask for help. I'm sure not if this is the way gentoo do things since I am quite new to it but let me know if it is not :-)

I did an NON network stage3 install via the
2004.0 universal CD1.

(1) After partitioning my disk I tried
Quote:
mkreiserfs /dev/sda5

but it did not happen since it complained that this command was only available for 2.2 or 2.4. Is this true? Used the ext3 instead but prefer resierfs from my x86 days.

(2) I added in the /etc/make.cong
Quote:
MAKEOPTS=-j3
since I have 2 processers, will this help?

(3) This is perhaps not a powermac related question really. Which USE variable gets used, the one in
Quote:
/etc/make.profile/make.defaults

or the one in
Quote:
/etc/make.conf

(4) I couldn't
Quote:
emerge genkernel
since it was not on the CD. Sorry if I have repeated this information again in this thread. Therefore I had no good working G5 .config? My question would a succesful emerge genkernel have given me a good 2.6, not 2.4 .config file?

(5) Due to (4) I tried configuring the kernel myself but failed and was forced to take away from my .config any crypto kernel options and most i2c related options. Then I got a compiled kernel and suceeded in geting to the end of the stage3 installation. Rebooted. Could get into OS X ok but when booting into linux the kernel hung. Went in agian and tried other kernel options. Again the kernel hangs at the line

"mice: PS/" mouse device common for all mice"

What I need now is a working .config for the powermac G5 (for 2.6.3 kernel sources). Can someone provide me with one?

Also, perhaps would a stage3 net install go any better?

Update - Success !!

I searched for the string
Quote:
mice: PS/" mouse device common for all mice

in the gentoo forums and then took away some AT_KBD, CONFIG_SERIO_I8092 and CONFIG_SERIO_SERPORT from my .config, recompiled and now it went well and the kernel booted :D

I found this time under /usr/src/linux/arch/ppc64 the file g5_defconfig and compared that against my
current to make thing work.

Still a good working powermac g5 .config file would be nice!

More update. I can't using the 2.6.3-benh2 log in as a normal user (which I created during the installtion). However root has no such problem. Serarching around I found a similar thread at:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=100499&highlight=system+hangs+user+logs

The solution (down grading the kernel) is given by boojummy towards the end of the thread. My question is this a know bug in the 2.6.3-benh2 kernel?'If so should I upgrade/downgrade to a new 2.6 series kernel?
