Hello,

I'm wondering what the status of the PPC64 port is. I have some IBM JS20 Blades arriving next week (maybe the week after) and I'm looking for an alternative to the expensive PPC64 RedHat and SuSE distros.

I have been talking to Tom Gall, but he hasn't responded to any of my recent emails, so I'm not sure where the project stands.

Thanks!

Chris

you should wait until new gcc is out. then the "-mcpu=970" argument supported and you will get a fully 64-bit system.

Any idea if a new GCC for PPC64 will mean that existing ppc users will have to do a re-install (from stage1 for example) ?
I'm quite new to gentoo hence my question.

You should be able to bootstrap your system up and re-emerge the rest of your packages from within your existing install once the new GCC is available. A "re-install" is seldom necessary since all the liveCD is, is a bootable gentoo environment so 99.9% of things are possible within your existing gentoo setup.

There are generic ppc64 stages available. We are waiting for mcpu=970 to stabilize. We are hoping to have ppc64 livecds with generic stages for 2004.1.
