i am wondering a couple things, especially pertaining to and iBook 2.2 (800mhz 640mbram):

should i upgrade to kernel 2.6 (from 2.4.24)..... and to which version.....

how is the compatibility? especially sound.......

is the video good enough to watch dvd's, or vcd's fullscreen, without losing frames? and what do i have to set to enhance this.

these questions i have seen, but never have i seen it answered for and iBook, or too which version.....

and if i should, is there a guide to doing so (which kernel flags should i enable, modularize, or disable) on a ppc, or even better an iBook.

thanks in advance,

I have the same iBook as you have, except that I have only 128mb of memory. Not too much.

I'm running 2.6.4 and its runs alright. I have two problems though. I'm trying to run completely on ALSA and the sound I get is really soft. Very odd. The sound quality is fine though. (even when all mixer channels at full)

I loose a few frames of dvd too when playing under mplayer but that could be because of my lack of memory. I have everything compiled statically and, if you wish, you'd be welcome to my kernel configuration

I've been using 2.6.x for a little while on my iBook -- same as yours, 800 MHz G3, rev. 2.2, 640 MB RAM -- and am very pleased. Currently, I'm running 2.6.4 from development-sources (not ppc-development-sources), i.e., no ppc-specific patches, just the vanilla sources from kernel.org.

CPU & performance: seems a little bit more responsive than 2.4.x, though the difference isn't quite as dramatic as it is on x86; sleep/wake, however, is much faster than with 2.4.x. cpudynd works wonderfully for managing CPU speed; pmud won't work with 2.6, but pbbuttonsd (with replace_pmud) does all I need. Sleep works fine.

Video: no complaints, but I don't do anything 3D, so I haven't done any testing with GLX or DRI. Also, I have the CD-ROM-only iBook, so I haven't tested DVD or other playback performance -- but I noticed that the latest (masked) version of mplayer (1.0-pre3-r5) has a patch to improve things with the PPC 750FX (our CPU), so that might be a good one to try.

Sound: use dmasound_pmac -- ALSA works, but like jaapjan, I get that 'barely audible' sound problem.

Net: all fine, including airport with the orinoco monitor mode patch for the 0.13e driver included with 2.6.4.

Modem: this is the only thing I haven't gotten to work in 2.6. In 2.4.x, the hcfusbmodem package provided modules that worked, but it doesn't work with 2.6.

Other: USB works fine (I use a bluetooth dongle, Palm cradle, and memory 'key', all without any problems). dm-crypt works well (I've encrypted my /home, /tmp, and swap partitions). mol works as expected. CD-ROM works, but I haven't tried audio CD playback (just ripping), and since I don't have a burner, I haven't tried that (note that 2.6 doesn't require ide-scsi for burning, and my experience with x86 is that the latest xcdroast handles ATAPI well). I don't have any firewire devices, so I haven't tested that; also, I've never tested 'video out' through the external monitor port. And, I'm still using devfs; haven't tried udev yet.

Random tips: Don't forget to create the /sys mount point for sysfs. If you're using metalog, older versions have trouble with newer kernels; I'm using the latest (still masked) version in portage. Finally, you may need to re-emerge xfree, but definitely not xfree-drm.

Here's my current kernel config, for 2.6.4 (that link likely will last as long as 2.6.4 is the most recent kernel). You might not need all the options I've chosen (bluetooth-related, usb-storage, tun interface for mol, dm_crypt, etc.). Finally, modules I have in modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6: dm_crypt, apm_emu, radon, dmasound_pmac, sungem, airport, ohci-hcd, sd_mod, usb-storage, bluetooth, hci_usb, rfcomm. The last five are for the usb 'key' and bluetooth dongle, and the first is for using dm_crypt for encrypted filesystems. Last but not least, if you're tempted to leave AGP and radeonfb as modules, don't -- they should be built into the kernel.

Best of luck!

Ummm, I'm tempted to make up a story about a module for detecting radioactive gas, but the truth is far more believable: that's a typo. I meant 'radeon', the DRI module for xfree.
