Here is the error when I run startmol -X
Code:

<*> Block Driver v1.1
ablk iofunc: Input/output error
ABlk engine error

here is the dmesg output:
Code:

attempt to access beyond end of device
03:0a: rw=0, want=19534452, limit=19534450

There is nothing wrong with my hard disk, disk utility reports no errors verfying the disk and I have no reason to suspect that the disk is failing. (Try googling for ABlk and mac on linux and you will find people claiming this error is indicating a problem with the hard drive rather than mol.)

I wonder, I user gnu parted to shrink my OS X partition and move my bootstrap partition so that it is before OS X. Could this have done something to the partition map that breaks mol? OS X and linux appear to work fine.

i had that happening a lot.... and it would hang on the bootup screen (with the penguin hugging the apple) and then i realized that it was the disc in my drive.... a dvd (dont know why it was causing trouble) that was messing it up...... i just removed the disc.... and it owkrs fine now..... so if you have cds... maybe external drives....
it is not a solution as to why its happening, but it worked for me.

You might have something there; my DVD-ROM drive was sent off for replacement after it failed, now I just have an empty drive bay. I don't see why not having a DVD drive in the bay would affect MOL's attempts to access the hard disk. Unfortunately, I don't know how to test this theory until the drive comes back from daystar tech. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, it will probably be a month until I get the drive back. :(
