Hi!
After some uptime I get into toubles with my sleep mode. After rebooting it's fine.
When I close my iBook it falls for about one secound ito sleep and then it wakes up for about one second and falls into sleep again and so on. I think its any application that keeps my iBook from sleeping. I've tried to close everything, log out. Only rebooting helps.
- Kernel 2.6.3-benh1
- KDE 3.2 with KDM running.
- Latest pbbuttonsd

Any ideas?

Unless the output of 'ps ax' offers an obvious clue, it sounds like you need to do a little experimenting to determine what process(es) are causing the problem. First thing to try is likely to boot without using KDM (remove xdm from the default runlevel), and see if you can get the machine to sleep when you're logged in at the console. If you can sleep then, re-enable xdm (KDM), then see if you can sleep before logging in (i.e., see explicitly if it's KDM, or if it's something about KDE). If you can't sleep at the console, though, you may have to check other services (see what's started, then stop them one by one until you can sleep). And so on, until you've determined what process keeps the machine awake, with the principle of your detective work being 'find out how little you must have running to sleep, then add processes until something blocks sleep'. This sounds like a lot, but chances are you'll narrow down the list of possibly problematic processes pretty quickly.

One hint: it might be useful to keep a record of what processes are running each time before you try putting the machine to sleep. E.g.: 'ps ax > processes.now' (change the 'now' part to something meaningful every time). That way you've got a record of what's running, so you can compare later if 'now1' works but 'now2' doesn't.

I don't use KDE, and haven't had any trouble putting my iBook 2.2 (G3 800, 12") to sleep with any 2.6.x kernel I've tried (currently 2.6.4, also with the latest pbbuttonsd), so I'm inclined to suspect it's some KDE-related process -- a daemon or monitor, perhaps, which polls something regularly. Likely only your experimentation will tell for sure, however. Best of luck.
