I was wondering about this for a long time, but I found out how multiple users can login at the same time. (ala Windows XP)

This howto applies to KDE and KDM only..

  • open the file /usr/kde/3.2/share/config/kdm/Xservers
  • uncommend the reserve lines. These X servers are used for new sessions.

Now login again to your KDE, and you should find a "Start new session" menu item. If the screensaver is active, there is a button to switch sessions as well.

Cheers. :)

If you use xdm:
echo ":1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt8 -nolisten tcp" >>/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers

To switch between X servers just press ctrl+alt+F7 or ctrl+alt+F8.
The best thing is if one Xserver dies the other is unaffected :)
