after a full installation routine which pass without any error I tried to reboot:

booting in macosx using yaboot works, but if I want to boot gentoo, I get:

hd:5, /boot/vmlinux: no such file or directory

mhhh, any hints for 7. try ??

I'm having the same problem. If I try to boot Gentoo, I get the same error. I've double and triple checked my yaboot config and the location and name of my kernel. If I try to boot a CDRom from the yaboot menu, the CD just spins and spins and nothing ever happens. If I hold down the 'c' key when booting, the CD will boot up just fine. The only thing that boots from the yaboot menu is MacOS.

Had some problems with booting gentoo on my iBook as well, just could not get the yabootconfig to run smooth, after a few attempts of "ybin" and "mkofboot" it worked.... not the best way of doing things.... (guess work :) )

Did you copy vmlinux to boot... don't laugh I forgot that once.
Do you have a separate partition for your /boot ?
Have you tried to boot from the open firmware ?

boot hd:5, /boot/vmlinux --- that is if your hda5 holds your image

A good site to go have a look at is:

Good luck

Did you remember to select 'Advanced Partition selection' and 'Macintosh partition map support' under 'File systems ---> Partition Types' in your kernel config? That's what was holding me back initially.

Good luck:)

I can boot from cd again using yaboot, and I installt the kernel on the /boot partition which is on hda5.

is it possible to install gentoo without a /boot partition and boot from /root, so that I only need:

bootstrap on hda2
swap on hda3
root on hda4

Yes, you can do without /boot on ppc. Checkout Gentoo Handbook (makes installation).
