are there any ariport utils to search for wireless networks? was is the command?
i would like to use it at school and i think it uses ttls if i remember correctly. how can i set it up to enter name and password so i can put it the runlevel. i dont want plain text password files.

search doesn't require usernames and passwords, although it does need to run as root.

net-wireless/wireless-tools is the package

how did you guys get this to work?

i get the following when i run iwlist scan

btw, i'm running 2.4.22 benh and have a 15" titanimum 1ghz powerbook

wireless access does work for me

You will need to patch your airport drivers with the monitor and the scan mode patch. It's not that hard to do, I have written a howto on it here:

iwlist scan is good for just getting a list of networks you can connect to, much like in the Airport menu in OS X. There is also apradar (emerge apradar) which will give you a nice gui interface where you choose the Access Point you want and it connects to it with DHCP.

If what you want is real wireless sniffing, I would recommend kismet. For it to work you will need the monitor patch. There is also wellenreiter: http://www.wellenreiter.net/ but it is not in portage yet.

You can set WEP keys with
iwconfig eth1 key s:mypassword
or
iwconfig eth1 key 0123456789
