A few applications I have tried emerging lately have come back with this error:

./setup cannot execute binuary file.

I have noticed this with OpenOffice-bin-1.1.1 today.

Did I miss something in my kernel compile or in my /etc/make.conf file?

OpenOffice-bin-1.1.1 is -ppc. The binary you have is for an x86 system and will not run on ppc.
If you want to check what kind of binary it is, you can use the file command:

Code:
$file `which openoffice`

There is a ppc binary ebuild for openoffice 1.0.3.1. Otherwise you will have to build it from source - start the emerge on a Friday and go away for the weekend. When you come back Sunday afternoon it might be finished

I guess it must have been the x86 binary it was bringing down. I was not even able to install it using emerge.

I went and grabbed the ppc binary off of OO and installed that. No problem there.
