I recently upgraded from 512MB ram to 1024MB and couldnt work out why free wasnt showing my full 1GB of memory. So I had a look in the kernel and found:

Processor type and features --->
High Memory Support (4GB) --->

Now it says to turn it off if you arent going to have "more than 1GB" of memory...thats bull, you need to set it to 4GB if you have between 1GB and 4GB. :roll:

Dont know if this will help anyone or not...took me a good 15 mins to figure out :lol:

According to some post on LKML I can't seem to find now, the 4G address space feature induces a lot of overhead; so much even, that if you have 1G of RAM, it is better to lose those couple of megs Linux cannot address without it than the overhead of the patch.
