Hey-

So I've spent the better part of all night trying to get X.org onto a new install of Gentoo on my powerbook. I've read just about everything I can find about it, but I can't make it work.

I've tried xorgcfg, X -configure, xorgconfig - none worked. I thought it was something wrong with my kernel (2.6.3-benh), so I'm compiling it again from the config file here (http://stimuli.ca/linux/files/.config-2.6).

However, I also think my xorg.conf file may have some problems. I've set it up as close as I can to how it is in some of the examples that are on this board though, so I'm not sure. I'd love it if someone would be able to post their xorg.conf from a 15" titanium powerbook with the ATI Radeon Mobility 9000, in a format that I can get it with wget, so I can drop it in and try it out.

Also....

When I run startx, I get a quick flash of the "x" cursor, and then my screen goes to black. I don't get any response, but I *DO* see the "hard drive light" flash, so I know there is activity. ALT + CTRL + DEL do nothing. Any tips on this would also be very helpfull.

I couldn't find anything in the forums, even though most every other problem I've ever had has been in here =]

I'm kind of new to Linux, but I've been using Gentoo for about 4 months now.

Thanks!!

OK. So at least X.org starts and runs normaly now. It turns out that having the DRI for Xfree installed into the kernel is a bad idea with X.org. When I took it out, it started to work.

However, it still does not shut down and get me back to a prompt when I hit alt+ctrl+delete. Any ideas on this would be appreciated. All it does is go to a blank screen - the powerbook is still on, but it does nothing. I have to reboot by holding down the power button.

Thanks!

[update] ALSO: the "exit" command in the menu inside xorg does nothing, it simply locks up the window. At this point, ctrl+alt+delete simply blanks the screen to black. I still have to do a hard reboot.

Have you tried using Xeasyconf?
Code:
emerge xeasyconf
should help.

I've been using xorg's version for a couple weeks now. all I did was rename my xf86config file to xorg.conf or whatever it's supposed to be called. the original config was made using xeasyconf, with it auto selecting my drivers.

I have dri compile as a module (2.6.5 benh), and glxgears runs, although I have the r7 chip, not your newer r9.

I'm curious if your fonts are working correctly. after remerging them, some are still not working for me...

As a TiBook 867mhz owner, I know what you speak of. I have xorg-x11 working (better than xfree in fact), but when switching to console mode from X, or killing X, the screen goes black. The computer is still running, and is fine, there is simply no output to screen.

The short fix is to put your TiBook to sleep, then wake it. This 'refreshes' X 9 times out of ten. One time in ten, X will be buggered and you may have to reboot, or simply kill X and sleep/wakeup again.

The thing is, I've had this problem for ages, with xfree and now xorg. If there are X users with TiBooks with radeon 9000s who DON'T have these probs, please post your X config.

The only time I didn't have this black screen prob. was when I hadn't tweaked my XF86Config for hardware acceleration. I could either have convenience and soft. accel., or true hardware acceleration and instability. I chose the latter.

Goddamn is this ever inconvenient!

SonnetSST: check your font paths. They are changed after switching to xorg. Make sure the paths in your xorg.conf are legit. Hint: /usr/share/fonts/, not /usr/X11R6/

I have a TiBook 867mhz and when I hit alt+ctrl+delete it takes me back to gdm. If this is what you are looking for I will post my X config.

I don't have a way to link it so check your pm. If it is not rude to post it here I will.

Thanks to our generous pal heavyt, I have a flawless xorg.conf.

Note that I have changed the font paths from heavyt's XF86Config-4 as xorg has new locations (/usr/share/fonts/) for the fonts. Paste in your current font paths as needed.

As I suspected, the reason I was having troubles before is because I had "UseFBDev" set to false, and console switching was a nightmare because of it.
