I've noticed that the ebuild of openoffice-bin is outdated: in the portage there isn't any recent version of it workink on ppc!
Latest working ebuild was
Code:
openoffice-bin-1.0.2

and now that ebuild has been removed from the portage tree...
What can I do?

You could simply use the ppc openoffice version provided by openoffice.

http://porting.openoffice.org/linuxppc/ppclinks.html

Or you could of course try to hack the openoffice-bin ebuild, so that it installs a newer ppc openoffice version.

Maybe when I'll have some spare time...

I emerged

Quote:
openoffice-ximian-1.1.54.ebuild

and it took 6 hours to build but so far it seems to work great. I don't know the difference between openoffice-ximian
and openoffice .

Here's the problem... I don't like to spend 6 hours to build a program like openoffice
Once upon a time I build it on my pc and there was no difference with the binary version (I'm talking of system performances)!

PS: I'm successfully using ppc's binary version taken from the ulr above

I've made the latest openoffice-bin ppc compatible. (emerge openoffice-bin) should now install ppc stuff on ppc.

A PPC openoffice-ximian binary can be found here:

Thank you very much! :D I tried emerging openoffice the other day and after about 5 hours gave up, didn't have the time. This has helped a great deal and is much appreciated!

I compiled
Quote:
openoffice-ximian-1.1.54.ebuild

om my 1.8 dual G5 (512MB) whilst in X windows and it took around 6 hrs (done overnight). I don't know why so long ... I didn't expect it to compile in the first place but it did. I doubt I have any real performance advantage over a openoffice-ximian-bin install.

Heh, it's a beast alright. Just for comparison.

Dual AMD MP1800 w/1024MB ECC RAM:
Code:

1109 pts/2 ~
ronmon@mimi > genlop -i openoffice-ximian
 * app-office/openoffice-ximian

   Total builds: 11
Global build time: 3 days, 4 hours, 16 minutes and 46 seconds.
Average merge time: 6 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.

900MHz G3 iBook w/384MB RAM
Code:

1111 pts/0 ~
ronmon@yuki > genlop -i openoffice-ximian
 * app-office/openoffice-ximian

   Total builds: 1
Global build time: 14 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds.

With build times like that, it's not a package you want to uprade on a weekly basis. What I like to do is settle on a version that works well (currently 1.1.53) and mask any higher versions. If something significant pops up I'll consider removing the mask.
