I installed Gentoo this past weekend and everything has been excellent except I get no sound. I followed the Powerbook how-to to configure sound. I have everything operating well, including the keyboard.

When my Powerbook boots I get the following error messages:
Code:
* Loading snd-powermac
FATAL: Error inserting snd-powermac (/lib/modules/2.6.4-pegasos0/kernel/sound/ppc/snd-powermac): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

And:
Code:
* Restoring Mixer Levels
No mixer config in /etc/asound.state, you have to unmute your card!

Here are the results of lsmod:
Code:
Module                  Size  Used by
sg                     29172  0
snd_usb_audio          73728  0

scsi_mod               81856  3 sg,ide_scsi,sr_mod
cdrom                  44092  2 ide_cd,sr_mod

When I type dmesg, I see "snd_powermac: Unknown parameter 'od'" repeated several times. When I hover the cursor over the volume control applet in Gnome, I see "No audio device". When I type amixer, I get "amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device"

Also when I stop X, I see "Error inserting snd_powermac..." repeated on the screen.

Anyone have any idea what I can do to resolve this? Thanks!!!

Just a guess. Did you follow these instructions to get ALSA working? If so, after modifying /etc/modules.d/alsa did you run modules-update?

It looks like you have the basics covered but that one has bit me before. What kernel are you running? Did you do make pmac_defconfig to get good defaults before doing your own kernel configuration?

I have the same computer and I ran into problems configuring sound following HOWTO's for other distros, but the Gentoo one worked for me.

Thanks for the reply!

I am using the 2.6.4-pegasos0 kernel. I followed the directions the first time around. I even compiled the kernel again, after using pmac_defconfig, and am still getting the 'unknown symbol' error message.
