I just got my 1Ghz G4 iBook (256mb RAM) the other day and, of course, the first thing I did was partition the harddrive to install Gentoo on it :) (I don't even have anything set up on OSX yet! Hahaha!) Anyways, so far the basic install has gone fine and I'm just compiling a few of the main packages I use: kde, mozilla, and emacs (in that order).

I'm just curious as to how long compiling KDE took for some of you? The only thing I installed prior to KDE was xfree-drm which means the system's very bare right now, so it will also be taking care of other dependencies as well. I set it up to emerge xfree-drm, kde, mozilla, and emacs (in that order) last night about 2:00am and it's in the middle of KDE right now somewhere at 10:30pm.

Hopefully it'll be finished by tomorrow afternoon so I can play with my new toy :)

First of all, there is really a s*tload of threads around here which deal with this exact question (maybe not on mac systems, but you should get the picture). Do a search.

Secondly, genlop sais the following for my system (dual AMD 1800+, 768MB RAM, medium optimizations, some stuff removed with DO_NOT_COMPILE).
Please note that some of the earlier compiles did take considerably (~30-50%) longer according to genlop, possibly ccache played a role in there emerges, I don't remember:
Code:
 Tue Apr 20 16:34:51 2004 >>> kde-base/kdebase-3.2.2
merge time: 47 minutes and 50 seconds.
 Tue Apr 20 03:44:02 2004 >>> kde-base/kdelibs-3.2.2
merge time: 54 minutes and 47 seconds.
 Thu Apr 22 02:26:03 2004 >>> kde-base/kdemultimedia-3.2.2-r1
merge time: 26 minutes and 22 seconds.
 Tue Apr 20 23:58:49 2004 >>> kde-base/kdenetwork-3.2.2
merge time: 27 minutes and 30 seconds.
 Tue Apr 20 16:52:25 2004 >>> kde-base/kdeutils-3.2.2
merge time: 17 minutes and 34 seconds.
 Wed Apr 21 01:22:16 2004 >>> kde-base/kdeadmin-3.2.2
merge time: 8 minutes and 37 seconds.
 Tue Apr 20 22:08:32 2004 >>> kde-base/kdegraphics-3.2.2
merge time: 33 minutes and 49 seconds.

Conclusion: you might want to emerge nethack first to pass some of the time. :P

Actually, I was just curious about Mac systems. I've done MANY Gentoo installs on x86 systems, so I have an idea of how quickly it can be done on those, but this is my first Mac install and I was curious as to how long it had taken others. But I wasn't aware of genlop! That's pretty cool! Thanks for that bit of information :)

Amazing.

An

Code:

emerge kde

took round about 2 days on a G4/400 with 960MB RAM. But there was no qt or any other stuff installed so far, just the base system and xfree (which took round about 2 and a half hours)

Kind regards,
Lars

strange that a Dual-G5 should be slower than my PowerBook G4@1.25GHz:
Code:

 * kde-base/kdemultimedia-3.2.2-r1

  Emerged at: Do Apr 29 18:22:48 2004
Build time: 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 12 seconds

Wellwell.

have fun*
