i just got my hands on a neat little mac setup for cheap. its a performa 6400, which originally had a 180 powerpc and has been upgraded to the sonnet L2 G3 at 300mhz. I have a big PC that i plan on selling soon, and I'm now using a a B&W G3 as my main desktop with osx.

id like to get some usage out of this machine though. i typically run slackware on my laptop and ive run arch before. ive never run gentoo before. i know that it should be a bit easier than arch to install, and probably about on par with arch and slack once its running, so im not worried so much about my level of linux knowledge, but i am worried about this situation being over my head. i know that the l2 g3 upgrades are quite fickle.

so what im wondering is if anyone has experience with this type of setup, what to expect, any "gotcha's" that i might run into. thanks!

Well - you'll have to use BootX (or god help you, Quik) which isn't quite as cushy as yaboot, for starters. The Performa is unlikely to have Open Firmware.

yeah, old world rom. it will have to use bootx. i tried to install yellow dog linux but it coughed up blood and died. im a bit leary of redhat anyway, and ydl=rh9. old kernel, old x and everything.

it choked on the video which kinda suprised me, because its the standard onboard vid and they list on the ydl site that that is supported.
