Hi!

I recently set up a mail server using the Virtual/Mailhost Postfix Howto. I ran into problems with the SMTP authentication part. A lot of documentation here and elsewhere recommends the following settings in /etc/sasl2/smtpd.conf:

Code:
pwcheck_method: saslauthd
mech_list: plain login

These settings don't work with SASL 2.1.18 (see http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=postfix-users&m=108050819502984&w=2). The following settings actually work:

Code:
pwcheck_method: auxprop
auxprop_plugin: sql
sql_engine: mysql
sql_hostnames: localhost
sql_user: mailsql
sql_passwd: <password>
sql_database: mailsql
sql_select: select clear from users where email = '%u@%r'
mech_list: plain login

(see also http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=postfix-users&m=107459414015937&w=2).

Another thing, there's plenty of documentation on the net that gives different locations for the file smtpd.conf. At least for version 2.1.18 on Gentoo, the location is really /etc/sasl2/ and no other symlinks should be necessary.

I hope this is of help to someone out there. The non-working authentication took me some hours to solve that night.

Regards, René

I have installed the virtual mail host as per the setup, and found that Outlook 2002 and 2003 cannot authenticate against this setup. Actually, 2002 fails to authenticate but handles SSL correctly, while 2003 fails on TLS, so it never gets a chance to authenticate (in my configuration I require SSL for SASL).

I contacted Microsoft, and they gave me a new DLL for Outlook, and now Outlook 2003 can authenticate.

I've had a problem with Outlook 2000, which sets the default port for SSMTP to 25 instead of 465. Microsoft can't seem to get this stuff right...

Now, that's good news.
