It's one of the first ones.
233mhz, atleast 32megs, 4gig, 24x cdrom, built in audio/network/monitor, and usb keyboard/mouse.

I'd like to install linux on this for four reasons.

1. Play mp3s
2. Basic web server, nothing fancy
3. Occasional web surfing, very minimum X session
4. I've got a Logitech USB Web Cam I'd like to setup for taking a snap shot every so often. Say every 30 seconds or something.

Think all of this would work?
Thanks!

I was planning on a stage3 install if such thing exists for it.
I realize that compilation time would be incrediable, but I do not plan on compiling too much.

I think you'd most definitely want to get more RAM in it if you want your webbrowsing to be anything but a pain in the ass. :o

I used a similar machine (but with 192MB RAM) as my main desktop for about a year, and it was quite acceptable when using WindowMaker and Opera. That was using Debian, I would never throw Gentoo on such a slow thing...

One thing you need to be aware of is that these early models has a design flaw, which means that at some point after years of use the screen will stop working (more info here). So don't use the iMac for something critical.

Anythoughts if a USB logitech webcam would work on this?
I could probably get more memory added to it.

I'm pretty sure that USB-devices that work on x86-Linux will work on PPC-Linux as well, but I have no idea about webcams. A Google search for your specific model will probably hep you... Also I found http://www.ee.nmt.edu/~guilbert/saic-robot/webcam/webcam.html which might be of interest.

I looked around for memory for mine and I found it pretty pricey, even 64MB would probably set you back ~50USD.

I have a rev. D with 64MB of RAM and found that a Stage 3 install is a good idea. Emerges can be done over night so Gentoo is quite useable for serving and will do as web surfing station if you need it. If you run just X with Dillo (http://www.dillo.org) it should be a competent web browser.

One word of warning when it comes to MP3 playback. The speakers on mine suck, and considering it's a six-year old consumer-level product, chances are that sound output won't be too hot either. WRT to the USB webcam, this might help: http://www.ee.oulu.fi/~tuukkat/quickcam/quickcam.html
