I'm having difficulties getting X started on my new 1Ghz 12" G4 iBook. I'm using kernel 2.6.4 and installed xfree 4.3.99 and configured it using Xeasyconf. Whenever I start "X -xf86config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4" all I get is flickering with the X mouse cursor in the middle of a black screen. Whenever I just "startx", I get the same thing, except it's sort of a yellow-orange screen.

I read somewhere here that you aren't supposed to have DRI compiled into the kernel. Originally it wasn't and I had the same problem, so I recompiled the kernel with DRI support in the kernel and same thing.

Any ideas?

sounds like it might be a mode/color depth problem. in Xeasyconf which modes did you select to use?

I've tried 8 bit and 24 bit and I still get the flickering with both depth modes.

Then check to make sure you have a workable Modeline ... if there's one there you can also try commenting it out and let X detect valid ones ...

If there's not one there you can generate one with Xeasyconf and/or the tool that comes with it, think it's called fbcheck

Last resort would be to try Xautoconfig, which is also in portage

Are you positive you are booting the kernel with video=radeonfb (or whatever your framebuffer driver is)?

I am booting with video=ofonly. If I try video=radeonfb, I get that weird screen flickering.

My problem seems to be very closely related to this:
