OK, I'm pleased as punch: gentoo is now running (wickedly fast) on my G5. One big problem was that xfree wouldn't behave: I got psychedelic colors in gnome and kde, and the screen was pretty much unreadable (there was a similar problem discussed here a while ago, with Tux showing up in pink...). After fiddling around for a while, I must somehow have hit the right combnation of settings in my config file; I don't even remember what I changed, but it's working now.
One minor cosmetic thing is bothering me, though: in console mode, everything is crisp and clean on my screen, but where the blinking prompt should be, I can only see some sort of speck or blob or whatever you want to call it. I have tried other settings (using the hints in this thread). I can get a clear red block without the blinking, but whenever I set the cursor to blink (regardless whether block or underline), I get the blob. I should add that I have an nvidia Geforce FX 5200 and that the prompt is clear when I boot from the livecd. Any suggestions about that? Anyone having the same problems?

sounds like a non proper video driver ... did you build in the Riva option in the kernel? (rivafb == nvidia)

make sure to use the latest kernel too. 2.6.3 was known to have some problems with nvidia. I think 2.6.5 (gentoo-dev-sources) may work better.

Thanks for your suggestions. I had been a bit confused because there's so much informatino on this subject out there: you have to enable video=ofonly. No no, it's video=fb. fb support must be enabled, or was it disabled? My kernel is (I think) the latest version, ppc-development-sources-2.6.5_rc2-r1. I rebuilt it with the CONFIG_FB_RIVA=y option enabled, but that didn't change anything. Well, it's just a minor cosmetic problem, as long as X works alright. Maybe the next version of the kernel will fix things.

Anyway, I;m writing this in Konqueror and am so happy I got it working. Will be back with more questions soon, I guess...

Here's the relevant section in my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen 1"
    Device      "** NVIDIA (generic)                   [nv]"
    Monitor     "MyScreen"
    DefaultDepth 24

   Subsection "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes       "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

As far as I can tell, 24 -bit seems to be working alright (though the difference to 16-bit isn't overwhelming).
And the problem with the prompt still exists, on both computers where I run gentoo 2.6.5 (a G4 Quicksilver and a G5).
