Yeah, I did a very lame thing, uncarefully checking what I typed during installation. The setup: two hard-drives, the first one (/dev/hda) containing three partitions (OS X, part A, part B) and the second (/dev/hdb) only two (Gentoo, stuff).
So, I used mac-fdisk to properly set up the Gentoo partition into bootstrap+swap+root then wrote the map onto the disk, no problem here.
Then, following the instructions I typed mke2fs -j /dev/hda4... Yeah, I forgot to use hdb instead of hda. So now part B won't mount under OS X, and the many utilities I've used couldn't repair it. The files are still there mind you, but badly mangled. Some tool allowed me to retrieve most of them, but they're unusuable: actual binary content of the files has been messed up all around, images contains text instead, text files contain binary data, etc...

So my question is: is there any hope for me to get all my files back properly? I figure something related to nodes map has been severely hit, is there a way to recover from such complication?

Thanks for any help.

(And yeah, I'll backup my files next time and triple-check what I do... )

OK, I managed to get most of my files back so I'll post the solution here, it may be useful to some people someday.

Using "Disk utility", format the partition you screwed up back to HFS+ (I did it without journaling). Then use "Data Rescue X" (or some other file recovery tool) and most of the files should come back to life unharmed.
