After some unsucessful attempts to install 2004.0 on an external
firewire disk attached to my ibook G3 2001 Late Ed. I'm giving 2004.1
a try.
Firewire support seems less stable than in 2004.0 (for which sbp2
support was provided as module).
Sometimes modprobe ohci1394 does not do correct firewire detection
(no /dev/sda? devices).
Doing a rmmod and new modprobe is a work around :
I notided some :
ieee1394: sbp2: Error logging into SBP-2 device - login timed-out
sbp2: probe of 0001d200e00d0d87-0 failed with error -16

I had to retry the installation 4 times and even later when
running some emerge got some Oops. Each time the message was :
Oops: kernel access of bad area, sig: 11
Call trace
dma-trm_tasklet 0xf8/0x1c8 [ohci1394]

Did anybody else experiment this ?

I know somebody who was having similar problems, flaky ohci.

He solved it by upgrading his kernel to a newer version. I know this isn't ideal, but its straightforward if you've done this before, and a good chance to learn if you haven't :)

http://www.linuxboxen.dk/howto_akt.php3?recnr=21 has some good advice, although Im certain that a search on these forums will turn something up.

Btw, which kernel version are you using? I think my freind's ohci support was ok in 2.6.1, then broke until 2.6.3... or something like that.

Good luck :)

Well I encounter these problems with the 2.6.5 kernel from the Universal 2004.1 CD. Strange no one reported it. But I guess few people use firewire disks and are bold enough to try to install Gentoo on it :(
