I have 2 iMacs that I would like to use a Live CD with.
Both are G3's one is a 5 Flavors running version X, other
is a iMac DV.
I have decided to concentrate on the 5 flavors.

I can't get it to try to boot off of the CD drive.
I know NOTHING about the Mac, I have tried 3 versions of
live CD's but none will even try to boot...

I hold down the 'c' on the keyboard, it will stay at a blank
screen as long as I hold the key, but once released it will boot to
the normal OS.

I am not 100% sure I am trying to boot it properly?
ALSO not sure I have a G3 CD

I have written the CD's under Windows 2000, and Win can read
them ok (as expected they won't boot a i386) the iMac DV doesn't
like to read most of the CD's, the 5 flavors will read it but won't boot.

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong, or where I need to look
for a 'basic' how-to on a "Live CD" on a G3 iMac?

Thanks for any help you can pass on

I dont know if this works on the g3s but try holding the option key . On the g4 that gives you a little gui to select where you boot from .

Can you specify which LiveCDs you tried? They need to be PPC specific LiveCDs i.e. a regular Knoppix CD won't work.

You are correct in holding down the 'c' key on startup to boot from a CD. I am able to boot the Gentoo 2004.1 Universal PPC LiveCD on my old iMacs so you might try that if you haven't already. It is not a GUI LiveCD, though. If you are looking for a GUI LiveCD that will be a little harder to find.

Sorry for the delay, have been out of town.
I'll try the 'option' key, first I have to find it, think I know which it is.
Next to (on each side) the spack bar.

CD iso's that I have tried...
At first I just downloaded, burn the CD & expected it to work.
After about the 3rd try I started to note what I was downloading
also started to verify the md5 sums, so I only know the last few full names

ppc/2004.0/livecd/ppc/packages-ppc-2004.0.iso
ppc/2004.1/livecd/g3/packages-g3-2004.1.iso
ppc/2004.0/livecd/g3/packages-g3-2004.0.iso
ppc/2004.0/livecd/universal/install-minimal-ppc-2004.0.iso

I started out with the Knoppix PPC Live Cd, then moved to Gentoo after that wouldn't boot.

I know nothing about Mac's, so I may be doing something 'basic' wrong. I download and burn the iso on a win 2000 CPU, have checked the md5 sum on the last 3 or 4 iso's and no errors on the md5's or any of the cd burns using nero (Win2000) have used Mostly K Hypermedia (700M), and a few Maxell (650M & 700M) CD-R cd's... (Is their a differant CD-R for a MAC?)

Thanks again for the help

Do you have OS X installed on any of them? If so, put in the CD, go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> choose the Gentoo CD.

You could also try clearing the PRAM first and then booting the CD. To clear the PRAM hold down CMD+OPTION+P+R right as you turn on the computer. Continue holding them down until you hear two chimes (the computer will reboot, chime, reboot, chime).

it seems the problem is with the cd burning... because macs can sometimes read cdsa burned for and under windows, but they will not necesarily boot them.

i dont remember exactly, but it think there is something about burning the cds under windows in RAW mode, thatway the bootability is preserved to the mac.

do you have a mac to try burning the cd under?

and knoppix will not work, its only x86 (last time i checked)

and by the way, the option key is the one that says "alt option", on my computer (think its the same) thats PAST the key that is next to the keyboard (the one immediately next to the space bar is one with an apple on it, and that is the COMMAND key)
