I recently downloaded the universal 2004.1 PPC livecd with the intent of installing Gentoo besides OS X on my PowerMac G4 400. I've installed Gentoo many times on x86 hardware, but this is my first time on a Mac.

I've added a second hdd (60gigs Quantum, master) on the same IDE cable as the OS X drive (30gigs Quantum, slave). I booted from the livecd and closely followed the handbook instructions and got no problems apart from minor mac-fdisk confusion (i'm used to standard PC partition tables).

Everything looks fine, I have a 512M swap partition on /dev/hda3 (swapon /dev/hda3 works) and a 55G reiserfs partition on /dev/hda4 mounted at /mnt/gentoo. I've untared both the stage3 and snapshots tarballs, copied over the distfiles, and mounted the accesory /proc and /dev fs.

When I try to chroot to /mnt/gentoo, the system thinks for a couple of seconds (maybe one or two) and then I get this :

Quote:
[root]/$ chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
Bus Error

I did my google homework but couldn't find anything specific about the "bus error". My understanding is that it is about as helpful as the more frequent segmentation fault and so I am left without a clue.

I tried rebooting, recreating my partitions (and re-untaring the tarballs), I really don't know where to go next. The only thing I can think about is downloading and burning another copy of the livecd, in case there was some error along the transfer process of the first livecd I created (which seems unlikely since everything else works perfectly).

Does anybody have another suggestion? I'd really like to make this work.

Update : I've tried chrooting from a minimal LiveCD I had previously burned, but get the same result. So the CD is not the problem. I will now change the hardware configuration (remove hdb, remove SCSI adapter) to see if it changes something.

Ah! Maybe this is the right forum to ask, then.

Update : the chroot error is gone. I am now using a single drive. But I have other problems. Things now point to a faulty HDD or IDE cable. Nothing to do with Gentoo. Phew!

One thing, though : why is the default LiveCD passwd for root encrypted? If you exit without changing it, you have to reboot from scratch. Bummer.

And also, how do you switch between TTYs on a Mac G4? Ctrl-Alt-F(n) does not work. Is it possible at all?

All right. Fixed it myself. It seems like it was the IDE cable.
