Basic understanding of Gentoo, I've done a stage 1 on a i386 before and want to do a stage 3 on a apple G4 now but for the life of me I can't figure out why the eth0 doesn't load up.

lspci returns
Code:
02:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 41)

ifconfig eth0 returns
Code:
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net/ returns
Code:
ppp_generic.ko slhc.ko

The cable IS plugged in, and the computer is obviously detecting the card on the PCI bus. I'm using the latest gentoo PPC universal installer.

Ideas?

you need to compile the kernel with support for the mac network chips Tulip or the other new one .

No! You only need to re-compile the kernel.

Use make menuconfig to select the extra stuff you need, then do
Code:
make oldconfig
and compile the kernel.

Follow this path:
Code:
Device Drivers-->Networking support-->Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)

and compile this modules into your kernel:
Code:

<*> MACE (Power Mac ethernet) support
<*> Sun GEM support

You may find this easier to build the kernel manually (see the handbook) instead of using Genkernel.

read the install directions carefully, find out exactly what hardware you have (google is helpfull), when you get to the make menuconfig part, go through all the options carefully and make sure to read the descriptions. It will probably take some practice before you are able to make working configurations .
