I would like to use the gprs modem of my nokia 7210 to connect to internet. But nokia 7210 can be connected only with irda or an usb-cable.
Anybody tried it? What do you suggest to buy, an irda adapter or an usb-cable?
I would like to use it under linux, I don't care if it doesn't work with macosx (but it would be great to have it working on both os!)

Using an usb-cable would save you from having to setup irda.
I use a motorola C350 phone with my ibook G4, it works fine using its usb cable and the cdc-acm module.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, but I have some questions: are all usb-cable supported by linux, only original cables work (on internet there're usb-cable at the price of 10$), what about macosx?
Reading from the kernel docs:
Code:
CDC Ethernet support (smart devices such as cable modems) (USB_CDCETHER)

This option supports devices conforming to the Communication Device
Class (CDC) Ethernet Control Model, a specification that's easy to
implement in device firmware. The CDC specifications are available
from <http://www.usb.org/>.

CDC Ethernet is an implementation option for DOCSIS cable modems
that support USB connectivity, used for non-Microsoft USB hosts.
This driver should work with at least the following devices:

* Ericsson PipeRider (all variants)
* Motorola (DM100 and SB4100)
* Broadcom Cable Modem (reference design)
* Toshiba PCX1100U
* ...

This driver creates an interface named "ethX", where X depends on
what other networking devices you have in use. However, if the
IEEE 802 "local assignment" bit is set in the address, a "usbX"
name is used instead.

Nokia cables aren't mentioned... anybody is using them?

Cable should not be a problem.
What I don't know is if your Nokia implements the ACM norm. If not it would probably be the usb-serial driver instead of cdc-acm.

By the way, the source you quote is the cdc-ether module, cdc-acm is in drivers/usb/class/cdc-acm.c.

The usb-serial module seems to work :D
Code:
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using address 4
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new driver usbserial
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial Driver core v2.0
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for PL-2303
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo drivers/usb/core/usb.c: registered new driver pl2303
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo drivers/usb/serial/pl2303.c: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver v0.10
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo pl2303 3-1:1.0: PL-2303 converter detected
Jun 11 09:31:12 melindo usb 3-1: PL-2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)

Now I'll try to use the gprs' modem
