I have an iBook2 G4 800Mhz

I installed xine, libdvdcss.
I use xine with alsa and xv.

Encrypted DVDs play fine (some times the sound cracks a little but that is not todays subject).

CPU usage is around 70-80% (measured with KSysGuard) and this makes the computer hot, and the fan is triggered.

When watching a DVD under MacOSX, the computer stay cool, and the fan is not functionning.

Can you share your CPU usage, so I can compare ? I'm looking for a player/config that would allow me to watch a DVD without the fan making (so I do not disturb my neighbours in the train)

Thank you

It is about 50% under MacOS X.
And I notice also that the DVD spins slower under MacOS X (and full speed under Gentoo Linux).

Well, there is this Altivec set of instruction in the CPU but I'm not sure Xine or Mplayer or Ogle can take advantage of it.

I could. But before I 'd like to share experience with people.

i thought it might be a kernel option for the dvd spin but asked in #gentoo and ferringb didnt thinkso, said it was most likely a app option. i would ask the irc chat

freenode #xine

freenode #mplayer

they might not respond right away, if they dont try a differnet time of day

OSX uses hardware accell most definately for dvd playback, where Linux does not .. this is likely the difference you are seeing

on my ibook G4 1GHz:

mplayer uses about 70% cpu when playing a dvd, and about 40-50% cpu when playing
a quite large, high quality divx/xvid.
