When I installed gentoo on my powermac G5 I emerged

Code:
ppc-development-sources-2.6.5_rc2-r1

However, today after "emerge sync" ppc-development-sources-2.6.5_rc2-r1 is no longer available. So
Code:
emerge -p -uD world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-kernel/ppc-sources-2.4.26
[ebuild  N    ] media-sound/alsa-driver-0.9.8
[ebuild  N    ] dev-cpp/gconfmm-2.0.2

which gives "sys-kernel/ppc-sources-2.4.26" and is not what I want.

I then tried to do
Code:
emerge emerge ppc-dev-sources
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) sys-kernel/ppc-dev-sources-2.6 to /
>>> Unpacking source...

 * Benjamin Herrenschmidt (benh), the upstream ppc kernel maintainer, has merged his 2.6 tree
 * with linus' tree. This means a separate ppc 2.6 kernel sources ebuild is no longer necessary
 *
 * Please use one of following kernels:
 *  - gentoo-dev-sources  (2.6 vanilla + performance enhancing patches + pegasos support
 *  - development-sources (2.6 vanilla - no pegasos support)

!!! ERROR: sys-kernel/ppc-dev-sources-2.6 failed.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 24, Exitcode 0
!!! (no error message)

Which is the best for the G5:

Code:
gentoo-dev-sources
or
Code:
development-sources

I presume if I emerge one of the above then I won't get ?
Code:
sys-kernel/ppc-sources-2.4.26

I prefer to hold off from the ppc64-sources since I'm quite new to gentoo and ppc. That would also involve
ppc64 unmasking. I just want to wait a few weeks to see how things are unless some developer can shed more light on the 64 bit ppc kernel stability with 32 bit userspace ?

gentoo-dev-sources is what was used on the latest livecd. Works fine here.

I'm compiling the gentoo-dev-sources atm.

Is it possible to use RivaFB again btw?

pvdabeel: Whaa, It's you! I spoke to you at Fosdem (you know, about the Xbox stuff) :)

I would also like to know whether rivafb is working. There was a warning displayed when emerging ppc-development-sources which stated that rivafb is broken on ppc, but gentoo-dev-sources doesn't mention it. The same goes for preempt.

If rivafb and preemptable kernel are still broken on ppc, then there should be a warning somewhere prominent. The kernel config help encourages you to turn preempt on for desktop systems, so it could really cause problems for people.

but would one do:
Code:
emerge  sys-kernel/ppc64-sources/ppc64-sources-2.6.4-r1.ebuild
emerge sys-kernel/ppc64-headers/ppc64-headers-2.6.4.ebuild

and then use a working .config and compile and update /etc/yaboot.conf and test?

Would the above break my portage i.e take away gentoo-dev-sources or can they exist side by side ?
Can anybody say if the ppc64 kernel is "quite stable" ?
