it really depends on what you would like to do

if using dvd/optical burner is important, get the g4 ibook

if using your computer rather than waiting/fixing/hoping for software, get the g3 ibook. you can't really play games in ppc linux (except games that are not very intensive), so the difference in video chipset is almost a moot point... plus man, the g3 ibooks have a composite output for both audio and video so hooking it up to an external display is much easier than the g4's (hafta get a vga->svideo and a stereo microphone-> composite adapters)

Yes. I have an iBook 2.2 (became a 2.3 when Apple replaced the motherboard, 800 MHz, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB disk, CD-ROM, Airport. Everything works, including frequency scaling (I use cpudyn), monitor mode with the Airport card, device-mapped encrypted file systems, and sleep (noticeably faster sleep/wake with 2.6). My kernel is currently from development-sources-2.6.6.

Couple of minor caveats. I haven't been able to get the modem to work with a 2.6 kernel yet (darn binary driver), but it worked with 2.4.x (emerge hcfusbmodem); I use the modem so rarely, however, that I don't mind. Second, I still use the dmasound module for sound, since it works very well (haven't tried sound input, only output); ALSA works, but last time I tried (couple of kernels ago), I still had a problem getting consistent volume levels. Third, I've installed MOL and successfully booted Panther, but haven't used it enough to be able to say how well it works. And, I've never done anything requiring 3D graphics, so I can't comment on how good the video performance is, beyond saying that it's plenty fast for 2D.

All in all, it's a great machine, and a great machine for Linux. My only hardware-related problem was a video problem requiring replacement of the motherboard (appeared suddenly after 13 months of use), but that was covered by the Apple repair extension program I linked above.

just to chip in,

I have one of these spanking new Powerbook G4 1.33ghz 15inch. It has a Radeon 9700 bluetooth etc....well, X works fine (I used x.org), sound works, bluetooth works, ethernet works, wireless obviously not and there is a patch in another thread I started (new powerbooks slow) which fixes the clock speed, so this baby goes from 666mhz (heh) to 1333mhz...which is sweet.

In all, it runs very well, very responsive....now if I could just mol to work, for some reason the kernel mod wont load, but thats for another thread...

I have a 700MHz G3 ibook, and I will add that mol works great. I run it on a separate virtual console, full screen. it's neat to jump between OS X and blackbox by hitting ctrl-alt-f8, ctrl-alt-f7

I do have two problems with mol though: it won't start up if you put a disc in the optical drive, and if I suspend my ibook while mol is running, it won't wake up again.

then again, I haven't updated my kernel and mol in a while, so they may work better now.

iBook G4's can do TV out, too, you just need to buy an extra doohicky from apple (~$30) that connects to the mividvi port on the iBook

The G3 is slow compared to a G4. You will definitely notice a difference when you are compiling. Everything else works apart form ##%%## airport extreme but a usb wireless is dirt cheap. So far I haven't bothered. Mol works fine on it.
Somethings like iDVD will not work on a G3 if you plan to have the best of both worlds and dual boot.
If it a matter of money by all means get the g3, if you want a superior machine , get the g4
