I have been having an issue with the mouse on my compile of sources-ppc-r2 ( specifically 2.4.21-ppc-r2 ) when using the ppc install instructions. I have been trying seval things including rebuilding with latest emerges from stage1 and also rebuilding with stage3 emerging only the kernel. I saw serveral posts indicating that they were using the benh kernel and found some docs saying that it has more experimental but newer hardware support (which i have).

My question is how to I emerge the benh kernel instead of this one that the install instructions pulls? I thought I would completely rebuild from stage1 again and use it instead.

I'm trying to find the package name but the benh kernel isn't listed on http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/sys-kernel/index.xml

Go into /usr/portage/sys-kernel/ and find out what the ebuild name for the benh kernel is then emerge it. This just downloads the source tarball and extracts it into /usr/src. Open a terminal and su to root then:

# rm linux
(delete the symlink)

# ln -sf <benh kernel folder> linux
(recreate the symlink pointing to the new folder with benh kernel sources)

# cd linux
# make menuconfig

you know the drill

I have problems with the actual 2.4.22-ben2 and my iBook
But 2.4.21-ben2 runs fine.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I got kinda busy at work and I am just now getting back into it.

Gordin, can you please elaborate on what kind of problems you had with the .22 benh kernel? Compile? specific driver?

And if I do experience problems how to I emerge the lesser version? I would guess something like emerge -v ppc-sources-benh-2.4.21-r2 or something like that but if you happen to know that might save me some time researching.

Even though I just synced today, I don't have the benh kernel or the ppc-development-sources available. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm using a TiBook 667 MHz. I also have no /usr/portage/sys-kernel-benh directory. Doing an emerge search benh or emerge search ppc-development yields no results.

Code:
bash-2.05b# ls /usr/portage/sys-kernel/
