Took the config file from /usr/src/linux/arch/ppc64/configs. Only added /dev filesystem support. The latter did the trick because my first attempts ended with "no initial console found". And on we go ...

That's excellent news as I've been having one heck of a time getting it to compile on my dual 1.8 G5. Could you please provide some more details like:

1. Was it a G5?
2. Your make.conf settings..
3. Your exact kernel version (ppc64-sources-2.6.6 i assume).

This would be a huge help. Thanks.

1. Dual G5 1,8 GHz
2. added / changed nothing (default)
3. ppc64 sources

One strange thing is that the init boot messages are swallowed (one does not get to see them). But everything is working as expected (network, console fonts, loadkeys etc.) Good luck :)

Nope, compiled it on PPC64. That is everything is PPC64. It'll probably be a drag anyway, since a lot of applications are not supported. But I'll take my 2nd HD to install PPC32 then. BTW: There seem to be a number of applications in portage that seem to work altho they are being masked.

After having a closer look at my logs I should add that I still get "Warning: No initial console found" but that it does not stop the boot process.

Just one more thing: I mentioned the problem with the warning of no initial console being found. That one got solved too. There were two device nodes missing at boot time, console and null. With the excellent Gentoo docs it was a delight to track this one down :)
