Although the documentation seems excellent and the installation process, though long, not overly difficult, I cannot successfully boot into a newly created kernel. I just re-installed a stage3 tarball (sources-ppp-linux) starting from scratch, and ended up in the same condition as a few days earlier: frozen system. A summary of my tale of woe follows:

my system is a mac 7300 with a 266 MHz g3 upgrade; external 9G scsi drive
d/l'd fulll universal iso image on a g4; checked md5; burned to cd-r at 1x on g4. booted using BootX, kernal G4, initrd as appropriate (forgot the name :), and kernel params = root=/dev/ram0 init=/vmlinux cdroot; followed installation manual instructions to install onto sdb (9G scsi drive; swap is 512M on sdb7 and root on sdb8); minimal changes to kernel config -- changed things like hfs and hfsplus compiled into kernel instead of modules. No errors that I saw. (Man, that's a lot of lines coming off that kernel build. Hypnotic!) All the tidy-up seemed ok.

cp'd the kernel to the mac's 'System Folder/Linux Kernels' folder. This was NOT clean. I tried to do this to the hfs+ partition, and it complained that I was trying to write to a ro fs, even though mount reported it as rw. Mounting an hfs partition allowed the cp, but: after the cp, doing an ls-l on the 'System Folder/Kernel Folders' directory showed an anomalous mod date: May 27, 1936. (BTW, in linux, date reported a proper date-time.) The mac os showed a comparable thing: mod date = Wed, May 27, 1935, 3:33 PM. ls -l in /boot showed a proper mod date. I do not know if this date is a problem or just some cruft carried over by cp.

So, after I booted into mac os, I cp'd the kernel from the hfs partition -- in mac os -- to the hfs+ partition, Linux Kernels. I cleaned up the BootX stuff, ie. removed ramdisk, entered a proper root kernel partition, wiped the kernel params, and tried to boot into my new gentoo system. Cursor disappears, sdb goes oink-oink for a couple of seeks, and then everything freezes. That's what happened last time I tried to installl ! :-\ I monkeyed around a bit trying a few different kernel paramters, but always the same.

Post-woe :) I pretty much have exhausted all the things I can think to try. The search strings I used in forums did not yield anything useful. The various kernel params that I tried were futile. I am out of options that I can think to try. I had problems in the beginning getting the universal cd to boot -- bad kernel params -- and that leads me to suspect I neeed some kernel parameters set in order to boot the install kernel. The mostly excellent doucumentation, however, says:

Now your machine is booted in MacOS, open the BootX control panel. Select Options, and uncheck Used specified RAM disk. When you return to the BootX main screen, you will now find an option to specify your machine's root disk and partition. Fill these in with the appropriate values.

I did that. Recall I have copied the May 27, 1935 kernel to the Kernels Folder at this point. Still. it's flash-flash, oink-oink, frozen-screen. Since I had so much trouble getting the cd to boot -- two problems: solved by the mac-app news group and digging around in the forums history -- my gut suggests BootX needs some more info. Certainly the documentation did not provide me with the required parameters for booting. Old world Macs do not really appear to be on the horizon.

OK, this has been a long ramble, for which I apologise. I *really* think gentoo is the right implementation for me. The fact that I cannot make a running kernel is, I admit, contrary evidence. I'm almnost certain it is something really stupid standing betgween me and a running system!

What I want: is an answer. But I'm happy with a pointer, a clue, a hint. Something! If you've got it and are willing to share, thanks. If not, thanks anyway.

best regards,
tony

I have successfully installed Gentoo on a PowerBook Wallstreet, which is an OldWorld. It was about a year ago though, so it's not exactly fresh in my memory. The fact that you can boot the kernel on the install CD should give you some comfort that you're close to getting it.

Can you tell us what kernel options you ended up giving to BootX. I'm guessing it was just like root=/dev/sdb1 or something? Also, what version of the kernel were you using? I never got 2.6 working on my PowerBook, only 2.4 (although haven't tried 2.6 since about 2.6.3).

Have you tried just copying the kernel from the universal CD and using that? That might give you a clue about whether it's your kernel or your BootX options that are the problem.

I have installed Gentoo on my Powerbook 3400, I have made some notes here: http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/powerbook3400/index.html

Yes, sorry I omitted that. It was late. It was kernel-2.4.26-ppc-r1. I tried using no kernel params, root=/dev/sdb8, and then root=/dev/sdb8 init=/sbin/rc. (This last one was just a wild guess.) Same result.

I'll give the universal cd kernel a shot a bit later today.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks enrique. I'll look at it closer a bit later today. I noticed, however, that you included a boot block in your partitioning. I thought the manual said that was unneccessary for old world macs. Is it required one be there even if it's not used?

Thanks again,
tony

It's not a boot block, it's a tiny partition which holds a minimal MacOS install + BootX and Linux kernels. If you get Quik working, you do not need it, but it's still nice to have for recovery purposes.

1. ok, the kernel is fubar. Following toojays suggestion I booted using the universal CD kernel, and everything came up fine -- modules didn;t load because they weren't there, but everything else seemed to work fine. I'll report back here when I get a working kernel ... if it's not too embarrassing. ;-)

2. enrique: thanks for the "boot block" clarification.

And my thanks again for the help. It's frustrating when I can't figure out what to try next.

Best,
tony

OK, still no joy. Working with config I managed to get (numerous) kernels which would start to boot but then fail to mount the root fs. I was about to give up when I noticed enrique used the ppc stage3 tarball while I was using the G3 stage3. So I started over and tried the ppc stage3. This tarball produces a different named kernel -- 2.4.24-r2 rather than 2.4.26-r1 -- but it too is unable to mount the root fs.

Before I give up trying to get gentoo running on this hardware, I'd like to request someone who has succeeded installing on comparable hardware post their kernel config file. That might give me some more things to try.

With thanks,
tony

Have you rembered to include the support for your root partition's filesystem? is your /etc/fstab ok?

yes. It is ext3, and I included both ext3 and --just in case there's something required from it -- ext2.

fstab seems fine to me. The line for root is:

/dev/sdb8 / ext3 noatime 0 1

The only other changes I made were to comment out the boot partition line, set the proper partition for swap, and uncomment the floppy disk line.

all CONFIG_EXT[23]_FS parameters =y

As I look thru the config file I notice the only scsi stuff enabled is:

CONFIG_SCSI_CONSTANTS=y
CONFIG_SCSI_MESH* are all enabled/set
CONFIG_SCSI_MAC53C94=y

I am clueless as to what these, as well as the many unset scsi params, are. Perhaps something else should be set?

Thanks again for your help.

FINALLY! It works! And yes, it was an embarrassingly simple oversight. I would have sworn I went through every scsi configuration parameter, but somehow I managed to overlook CONFIG_SCSI_BLK_DEV_SD. Set that, and it came up quicker than a pubescent teenager at a Pamela Anderson photo shoot. What can I say? Obviously Hazel and Adam did not raise any smart male children.

Rather than continuing on I think I'll spend some more time trimming back the kernel, since I have so much experience building them at this point. :) And yes, I'll save the config file before starting over again. Unless the moderators complain, when I am done I'll post my final config file in hopes it might be of some use to other old world folks who might stumble upon this thread.

After that, I'll follow enrique's lead, and install GRP. Probably need more help at that point. :)

This must be how carpenters feel when they start hitting the nail instead of the thumb.

My sincere thanks to toojays and enrique for keeping me going!

Best,
tony

I got diverted. Here is the config file I finally ended up with. I haven't tried everything yet, but this seems to work and produced a kernel ~500K smaller than what I started with.

I have/had gentoo running on a PowerMac 8600, but it's not currently hooked up to anything (monitor, etc.) If you still need any help I can hook it up and pull some info off of it.

Thank you for the offer. I seem to have it working pretty well now, although I am thinking about starting all over again with stage1 -- just for the experience. :)

Well, I can say from experience, that a stage 1 install on my Powerbook 3400 (PPC603e @ 240Mhz) took a while... well a couple of days until the base system was installed, and about 2days to compile X :)

<laugh> Well, thanks for the time stamp, Enrique ... and your web-page! The only reason I'm considering it is because I'll have about a week to do all that. (No one else uses this machine.) Perhaps I can get it donw in that time. :)

Best,
tony
