|I have been trying to install Gentoo on a G4 (AGP) workstation. When I tried to partition the hard drive, I got error messages when I tried to remove some of the partitions. When I tried to reboot, I couldn't reboot from the hard drive. (Before I began the installation process, MacOS 9 was on that hard drive, and I had no trouble booting into MacOS, so I don't think there's a problem with the drive or the connections.)
The partition numbers and types on my drive look like this:
| hdb1 Apple_partition_map
hdb9 Apple_Bootstrap [my boot partition]
hdb10 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 [my swap partition]
hdb11 Apple_UNIX_SVR2 [my root partition]
When I reboot holding down the "option" key, I got icons on the screen for a CD-with-penguin and hard-drive-with-penguin. Clicking on CD-with-penguin boots the Gentoo CD-ROM that's in the CD-ROM drive; clicking on the hard-drive-with-penguin, there's some delay, and then both icons are redrawn with a distortion that appears to be the UI's way of saying "failure".
How do I fix this problem, or at least get more diagnostic information?
