This is my first post. Been running gentoo on a Dual G4-500 since feb and love it. Unfortunatly when I try to emerge a new, or any version of gcc it gets stuck at checking what nm to

use... nm
checking what objdump to use... objdump
checking assembler alignment features... .p2align including maximum skip
checking assembler subsection support...

and it'll stay there until I force it to stop.
Running gcc version 3.2.3 20030422
I am running kernel 2.6.7-r3, and have 896 megs of ram and around 3 gigs of HD space free.
There are a few other files that I am unable to emerge. They just stall out, and even if I leave them for days at a time I never get an error messege.
Trying to emerge libperl 5.8.4 or 5.8.2 gets stuck at
Checking compatibility between /bin/echo and builtin echo (if any)...

This problem has been around since march and it is now really starting to bother me. This is the first time I have had a problem I cannot solve. Any suggestions/solutions?
I have searched for hours on this problem and have not found it anywhere else.

I had a similar problem some time ago that was probably
started by the use of a bad glibc (which was removed from
~ppc in a very short time but I had already started an
emerge -e world). In my case the stalling was due to the fact
that "cmp" from the diffutils ebuild was miscompiled and
hanging and because of toolchain problem I was never able
to recompile it right, I ended up reinstalling everything but
that is an other story. Can you post your "emerge info" and
check that your cmp work? (Just type cmp -v if I remember
well and it should come with the version if it is all right otherwise
it will just hang.)

Thanks a million. It looks like my cmp was corrupt. Since gcc was working, I jsut re-emerged diffutils and now gcc 3.3.3 is compiling.
