right after typing
Code:
#emerge -vU world

silly enough... i saw this post called 'emerge -U will kill your Gentoo
and i got terribly frightened...
the process is taking a lot of hours, it is still going, cause i havent done any emerge worlds for a long time...

i am a total newbie and wish to know:
1. what will happen after this emerge -U world
2. what should i do? (to keep any damage to a minimum;)

i hope someone can enlighten a scared and somewhat embaressed newbie

emerge -U world "only" updates all the ebuilds you have installed to the most recent versions. there is nothing you have to worry about it just takes time
(allthough i have to admit that i didn use this command yet since i quite a newbie too)
good luck! loki!

Calm down, nothing bad will happen.
It just updates world, very much like emerge -u world.

Read the thread you are refering to. Emerge -U world will not be a problem if you use it once, but it can be a problem if you use allways.
