Hello,

I recently installed gentoo on my iBook 500 in the hope that I would be able to play some DIVX videos that my computer is too slow to play in OS X. I have almost everything working, but when I try to use alsa in mplayer I get very choppy video and sound. If I switch to oss, it complains that there is no sound device and the video plays fine.

Sure enough
Code:
 motku root # ll /dev/sound/
total 0
crw-------  1 wilson audio 14, 0 Dec 31  1969 mixer

I'm not sure what information would be helpful, but here is my lsmod output:
Code:
Module                  Size  Used by
hfsplus                65860  2
snd_mixer_oss          22144  0
snd_powermac           40240  0
snd_pcm               116120  1 snd_powermac
snd_page_alloc         12840  1 snd_pcm
snd_timer              28164  1 snd_pcm
snd                    64696  4 snd_mixer_oss,snd_powermac,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore              11428  1 snd

Thanks

To use OSS with alsa you need OSS-Emulation. If you are using a 2.6 kernel, you can activate it in the alsa section of your kernel config.

Solved!

I actually did have ALSA oss emulation enabled in the kernel, but I had neglected to load snd-pcm-oss, which gave me my /dev/sound/dsp and allowed me to get decent sound in mplayer.

In the process of solving this problem I tried loading dmasound-pmac, which gave me /dev/sound/dsp, and therefore allowed me to use oss. Unfortunately, putting this into the kernel prevented me from loading snd-powermac and using ALSA.

Thanks anyway.
