Alright.

I need some help getting this thing configured. I'm really confused about which drivers I should use. I've emerged Xorg without a problem. Do I now recompile my kernel with DRI support for ATI Radeon cards? Do I emerge xfree-drm?

Which drivers should I use and how do I get them?

I don't think you need the xfree-drm . . . at least I don't have it anyway. I have the radeon DRI driver (from the kernel) compiled as a module, and load it automatically on boot. I get about 700 fps with glxgears, although I've seen a post somewhere suggesting it should be closer to 900, so maybe my setup isn't as good as it could be.

I think I figured most of my stuff out from Colin Leroy's page, although he has the previous revision iBook and some of the instructions are out of date.

Xorg does install the source for some drivers to /usr/src, but they didn't seem to be accelerated at all when I tried them.

Thanks for the help. I compiled /dev/agpgart, the uninorth-agp as well as the DRI Raedon support. Is there anything I'm missing?

I'm tempted to just steal Colin's .config and XF86Config.

Yeah, it sounds like your kernel is okay, you may want to just use Colin's XF86Config, which is mostly compatible with xorg.conf anyway.

I think the important stuff is that you load glx and dri in the module section, and that you have the DRI section. Actually, looking at my config, I think I took it directly from here.

Colin's has a post with his glxgears speeds here. I can get similar speeds with the following device section:
Code:

Section "Device"
   Identifier     "Card0"
   Option       "UseFBDev"
   Driver         "radeon"
   Option      "CloneMode" "1024x768"
   Option        "AGPMode"   "4"
   Option      "EnablePageFlip"
EndSection

I tried the AGPFastWrite option as well, but that locked up my machine when I tried to load X.

Sweet! XOrg is working.

All I had to do was change the syntax in the ServerLayout section:

Code:

Screen0      "Screen0"   0 0
------------------------------------------
Screen   0   "Screen0"   0 0

I added your modifications to the Device section and was able to get 950fps in 24bpp and 1850fps in 16bpp.

This is all with the support for DRI and Raedon compiled directly into the kernel.
Thanks!
